A Guide to Sharpening Pastel Pencils with Knife and Sandpaper

Vibrant hues ready for creation: freshly sharpened colored pencils.

In a world full of fancy sharpeners, I've found my own way – a trusty knife and a sheet of sandpaper. Call me old-school, but there's a certain joy in doing things by hand. Sure, it takes a bit of time to get the hang of it, but since I started using this method, I haven't broken a pencil tip since. Join me in embracing the simple pleasure of sharpening pastel pencils with a touch of personal craftsmanship.

Materials Needed:

  • Pastel pencils

  • Sharp knife

  • Fine-grit sandpaper (300-400 grit)

Step 1: Using a Sharp Knife: Hold the pastel pencil firmly in one hand and the sharp knife in the other. I prefer placing my hand on the table to keep it steady while sharpening. With controlled and gentle pressure, start shaving away the wood casing in a rotating motion.

Step 2: Enhancing Precision with Sandpaper: Lay a small piece of fine-grit sandpaper on the table. Rotate the pencil against the sandpaper, sculpting the point to your preferred sharpness. This technique ensures a smooth finish and allows for precise fine-tuning of the tip.

Step 3: Brush Away Residue: Once satisfied with the sharpness, use a soft brush or cloth to gently sweep away any residue left from the sharpening process. This ensures a clean surface for your next strokes.

Tips for Maintaining Sharpness:

  • Sharpen as needed to maintain a fine point.

  • Store pastel pencils in a protective case to prevent breakage.

  • Rotate the pencil while sharpening to achieve an even point.

  • Rotate the pencil while drawing to keep the tip even and sharp a bit longer.

In the realm of artistry, mastering the craft often involves finding methods that resonate with your personal touch. While sharpening pastel pencils with a knife and sandpaper may require a bit of practice, the results are undeniably worth it. This approach may take a tad more time, but consider it an investment in the safety and longevity of your precious pastel pencils.

Through my journey, I discovered that even the most advanced sharpeners eventually betray the delicate tips of my pencils. This method not only safeguards against breakage but also proves to be a cost-effective solution. Plus, with the availability of metal sandpaper, you can extend the life of your tool without constantly reaching for a new one. So, embrace the slower pace, relish the hands-on experience, and enjoy the satisfaction of sharpening your pastel pencils with a method that not only works well but stands the test of time.
